Kandura & abaya care: wash, press or dry clean?
How to keep kanduras crisp and abayas flawless in the UAE climate — when to wash & press, when to dry clean, and how embellishments should be handled.

A kandura is judged by its finish — the collar, the cuffs, the fall of the fabric. An abaya is judged by its drape and how the black holds its depth. Both are national dress worn daily, and both are unforgiving of careless laundering.
Everyday kanduras: wash & press
For daily-wear cotton and cotton-blend kanduras, a proper wash followed by professional pressing is the right routine. The key is the pressing — home irons flatten the collar and leave shine on the placket. Professional steam pressing keeps the structure crisp without glazing the fabric.
Premium fabrics and occasions: dry clean
Winter-weight kanduras, premium Japanese cottons and anything worn for occasions hold their body better with dry cleaning and hand finishing. The same applies to abayas in crepe or nida fabric — solvent cleaning preserves the black depth that repeated water washing slowly fades.
Embellished abayas
- Always point out beading, embroidery or stonework when you hand the garment over
- Embellished pieces should be cleaned in gentle cycles and finished by hand
- Never machine-wash a stoned abaya at home — the drum edge is what chips stones loose
We handle kanduras and abayas daily at all three Abu Dhabi branches, with free pickup from Al Shawamekh, Al Shamkha, Baniyas, Al Nahyan, Muroor and Delma Street areas.
