Wash & fold vs dry cleaning: which does your garment need?
How to choose between washing and dry cleaning using the care label, fabric and construction of your clothes.
Washing uses water and detergent; dry cleaning uses solvents. The right option depends on the care label and how the garment is made. Neither is the best choice for every item.
Often suitable for washing, if the label allows
- Cotton t-shirts, casual shirts and trousers
- Gym wear, undergarments and socks
- Bedsheets, towels and pillowcases
- Everyday cotton kanduras (with professional pressing)
- Kids' everyday clothes
Items to check for dry cleaning
- Suits, blazers and structured jackets
- Delicate silk, wool and viscose garments
- Embellished, beaded or embroidered abayas and dresses
- Evening gowns and wedding dresses
- Ties and anything labelled 'dry clean only'
